Picton Sculpture Symposium

Spring 2008, Picton Foreshore

Sculpture Symposia have been held throughout the world for many decades, not only as a forum for discussion about sculpture but also to provide an opportunity for the public to watch works of art emerge from raw stone.

The focus of the Picton Sculpture Symposium is large-scale stone carving. Our participants are a mix of amateur and professional sculptors and come to the Picton Sculpture Symposium from near and far. Each will be inspired by the 2006 theme: Fragile World, while sculpting in the scenic surrounds of the Picton Foreshore. Their emerging artworks can be viewed throughout the duration of the event (from 10am – 4pm daily) and we encourage the public to visit the site multiple times to watch the artists gradually transform blocks of Oamaru limestone into works of art.

It’s also a fabulous opportunity to buy a unique piece of artwork. All the sculptures are available for purchase via a silent auction held throughout the duration of the Symposium. Prospective purchasers can view and bid for the completed works during the Exhibition Days or lodge bids in the auction register if visiting at an earlier stage. A shop will also be available for buying smaller pieces.

The Picton Sculpture Symposium is organised by the Picton Sculpture Symposium Trust and sponsored by Port Marlborough. Proceeds from the Symposium are channeled through the Trust for the development of arts sponsorship in the Marlborough region.
